This course is a hands-on study of machine tools and their use in clock repair. In addition to the lathe, with which we are already familiar, we use the milling machine, band saw, and other tools to fabricate various parts used in repairing clocks. Students also use machine and hand tools to construct a clock movement. After completing this course, the student should be able to cut out, square, and lay out clock plates; turn, fit, drill and tap, and align clock pillars and screws; make a single point (fly) cutter to cut teeth; make clock wheels and pinions; mount, depth, and upright the wheels in the plates; file, finish, and fit cast or machined clock bridges and supplemental parts; make a complete escapement; and interpret mechanical drawings of clock parts PREREQUISITE: C-900 |
