This course covers the antique English-style tallcase or grandfather clock in depth and looks at the problems that are associated with their service and repair. Topics include making parts and repairs in an unobtrusive manner; weights, cable, and chains; in-home service and proper setup of the movement and case. Other types of antique tall clocks also are studied. Routine service to the modern tall clock is covered, along with the issues associated with packing tall clocks for moving. After completing this course, the student should be able to identify areas subject to wear and perform repairs to the English-style tall clock; identify parts that are commonly damaged or missing and construct appropriate replacements; service various other antique tallcase movements; perform service to modern tall clocks; and prepare the tall clock for moving.
